Where would you all recommend taking my alternator too. I removed it from the car and it does not turn freely it rubs as it is turning. I removed the fan and same result.

Sounds like shot bearings. Rebuilt units can be had for about $150- $250, try Pelican or even Rockauto. Or you might just get yours rebuilt locally. I believe there is a starter and alternator rebuilding service on Harford Rd in Parkville, used them many years ago but I can't remember the name.

Or a couple of local shop to have that one rebuilt. Lots of threads on this over the years try "search" for some results.

Any suggestions on how to get the alernator seperated from the fan housing. The fan cam off but I cannot get the alternator to budge. I took all of the nuts off the back is there somthing I am missing.

Ok what would you do , I called around and they said it would be about $200.00 to rebuild, I see on Ebay I can get one already done for this, What would you all do.
I can see where inside there is a sodered wire that rubs the housing, It did not do this until I tried to remve the fan. I hit hte shaft with a light tap and thats when this started to hit.

I would only consider eBay if it is a manufacturer's reconditioned unit. Otherwise I would get it rebuilt locally by a shop with a well-known reputation (search for threads containing Arlington Armiture; yo umay find a couple shops listed)

Honestly, I bought one from Pelican, swapped it in and never returned the old one for the core charge.

the bearings are not hard to replace and are cheap.

Just took it apart, Vicegrip you are correct, I work for a bearing supplier and changed them out today at work. Nothing to it, I hope it works and save me some $$$$$$$

Winnar!

Check the come rings and carbon brushes for wear and that they are in good shape after you get it back together and I bet you will be good to go.

Can you post the bearing data / alt model for others to have so they can do the same?

BlackTalon, what were you looking for...Part numbers if you have themNothing in particilar at this point, but just a great piece of info to know. Someone who works a ton both on cars and various other motors, etc., (i.e., like VG) likely sources lots of bearings each year.

I go through a lot of bearings and a good local house would be handy. I stock the common ones I use such as 1-7/8 pillow block, 50mm pillow block and 2000 and 3000 size bearings. I maintain and repair in house 52 mult compressor RTU units and countless other machines with elec motors such as compressors, pumps, lifts, tire machines and the like. Everything from 1/8 hp bath fans to 25 hp air compressors and RTU blower motors.

I was looking at other post on aternator bearings and got the info of the one the other person had disassembled , went and got those bearings and they were different then the ones in mine, Not sure if different models take different sizes. Mine has a rebuilt sticker on it and everything looked good except the china bearings that were installed. I used SKF beafings so I should be good for awhile.

I always seem to end up taking it apart first to see what bearings it has before getting them. Never seem to have the right info for what bering is in what alt. Have not run into an oddball, can't find it bearing yet. Had a inlaw owned (non Porsche) alt that the manu was far too proud of and was only availble at the dealer in new or manu rebuilt form at $$$. $3 bearing from Grangers and back in action. ($3 anything from Granger tells you how long ago that was)

If you're still looking for a place to rebuild it, here's a place in Bmore where I had mine done last year.

I did not know Best Battery rebuilt alternators, but I have used them many times for battereis and they are great. Ask for Rosanna. She is a longtime friend and the owners daughter unless she has taken over the company by now.

Be careful when reassembling in housing. Easy to get it a little cockeyed so it rubs. I think most will agree it just takes careful reassembly.
