This is from the service manual.  I don't understand what it means by 3mm pretension?   Can someone explain?   I have not worked with these kind of gauges before.

I THINK what they are saying is that you want (at least) 3mm of the shaft pressed in so that it can read (at least) 3mm of the valve opening w/o bottoming out the gauge and loosing contact w/ the tip.  The dial goes around multiple times - just start w/ it somewhere near the middle.

^ This. At the point where the gauge is fully extended there should be around 3mm of additional reach left in the gauge. Ensures you don't get errors because the shaft is not quite in contact at full extension, which is what SMD said restated.

Thanks....I'm sure that would be apparent once I get to it, but that manual is clearly written/translated for people that know what the hell they are doing.
