Question for any plumbers in the house.

When joining PVC to cast iron sewer pipe, is it needed to use the metal reinforced Fernco fittings or is there another/better way? Just curious, as there aren't many people that do cast iron drain pipe anymore.

Also when can you use the non-metal reinforced Ferncos? I'm guessing the metal reinforced strongbacks are to be used if it were underground...

Thanks for your input.

Is it underground? If not, the rubber boots work just dandy. There is no pressure and gravity is working for you. Haven't had a problem with 'em and had them funneling sh*t for 15 years in an old house. I have seen the city use them on municiple sewer lines under the roads.
