Anyone know of anyplace in the DC area to look at/buy decent quality door hardware (levers, entry sets, deadbolts, etc)? I'd like better than the bottom of the barrel Kwikset crap you can get at Home Depot. The Baldwin stuff they used to sell there was pretty good, but has been replaced with their "Prestige" line, which is apparently nothing more than Kwikset crap (both owned by B&D) with slightly better finish.

I know there are a lot of places on line to order, but buying 20 or so solid brass door knobs makes shipping a tad expensive. Plus, I'd like to see what I'm getting before I buy.

You might try Union Hardware in Bethesda. Very high end, though.

I did baldwin and schlage in my house. Schlage is less than half the price of baldwin...online about $35 a set (locally closer to $50). Very happy with quality. Shipping is usually free. I had over 50 set delivered. Here's an example

Schlage is decent stuff.

If you want something a lot better take a look at http://www.sargentlock.com/
I've got a house full of Sargent that looks and works as well today as the day it was installed.
If interested you can see some of their stuff at Precision Doors & Hardware

David, you are right Restoration Hardware is no longer in Alexandria, but there is one in DC, Annapolis and Tyson's. I guess it has been a while seen I had been there.

I bought a bunch of the Schlage sets similar to what Ryan linked. Decent stuff.
I ordered most of mine thru TW Perry in the Airpark. They have other manufacturers' lines as well.

Jazz, Barrons Lumberyard in G'burg appears to carry Schlage, too.

Nice locksets and standard keyways = not so nice security. I like Schlage and most of the other home depot brands and grades...for ease of picking with a tension bar and rake. Yale A and GA keyways are a bit better, can be picked but takes a bit more time/skill. Quickset pick times = about as fast as you can do it by pulling your keys out, finding the right one and stuffing it in the lock.
Medco is hard* to pick and is a patented keyway so making copies of keys by contractors or housekeepers is harder than stopping at the local hardware store.

Agree that Smoots is good for res upper grade stuff. You can also get good stuff online if you know what you need.

*I have yet to be able to pick open a Medco and it kind of ticks me off.....

EDIT above post sounds bad unless you know I am picking locks as part of my work as a hands on facilities manager.
