Looking at an older model BMW E9, I know that it has not ran in about 2 years, and that the owner really doesn't want it. Looking at the interweb it seems like its a valuable car and that the body was built by Karmann. Its a 3.0l 6, 4 speed manual!
Engine is free, though it seems like it might be a fuel delivery or electrical problem.

Questions::?

Does anyone have any experience with the E9?

Where is the best place to source parts both new and used?

Any thoughts or comments?

Thanks in advance!
-Bill

That's a classic 3.0cs. Beautiful car. Not sure on pats sources but if you are up for a resto project that's one well worth doing.

Those are damn cool and have a nice following. It's a project worth taking on.

Nice car.

M30 engine.

Twin Carbs or Bosch D-Jectronic fuel injection.

More HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_E9#3.0CS_and_variants)

Would take $ome work and patien$e to re$tore but worth it if you love the Cs cars.

Had a '75 E3 3,0Si (4-door "Bavaria" in the US) with the M30 motor ... was great mated with a 4-speed manual but prone to overheating (very bad ... don't do this!). :)

I got parts from regular sources (shops with Worldpac accounts, bavauto.com, etc...)

Beautiful cars. I've always wanted one. My casual research has told me that rust is a MAJOR issue. Be sure and have the body thoroughly checked out by someone who knows them.

There's a shop in Alexandria that specializes in classic BMW work. I don't have any experience beyond buying parts, but the owner seemed knowledgeable. http://www.alexandriabavarian.com/

Hope it works out. Not enough of these on the road.

That's the successor in a way.

Like many cars from the '60s and '70s, rust is a big worry/concern/issue. More than the mechanicals/electronics, folks restoring these look for a rust-free chassis.

Well, I took a look at the E90 today. It doesn't seem that bad on the outside,"That said I am driving around a primered 911sc".
Rust was present on the trunk lid, and the bottom of the door panels, as well as the front passengers fender. The floor pans and trunk only had surface rust only.

Engine looked decent, with new ignition coil, distributor cap, and battery terminals. The battery was sitting on the drivers floorboard so...

Interior is rough to say the least, drivers seat is toast, and wood trim is in rough shape, needs to be sanded, stained, and varnished. Back seat needs to be recovered as well due to a large hole.

Weatherstripping is toast on the doors, side windows, and the trunk as well. Also the tool kit is bone dry.

Other than that it looked decent, waiting on a price.

That doesn't sound good.

How'd the shock towers (front and back) look?

I really think I'm making it sound worse than it is..

I found a link about a E9 restro start to finish:

Dream car especially in fjord. If that is not the original paint, there could be serious rust patched with bondo (or who-knows-what) and painted over. Going over it with a paint depth gauge would make a lot of sense. The trouble areas are well documented...fenders, wheel wells, rocker panels, ...there's a paint shop in Falls Church that knows these well, can't recall the name.

Bill,

E9 coupes are very cool cars.. however, they are expensive to properly restore. I've had several. The wood trim you described is more than a notion to get right, rust of course as others have mentioned is always an issue, interior should be leather... and many of the trim items are hard to find or expensive.

If you have any questions about them let me know.

Reach into the front wheel arch. You'll know to run away if the steel feels like a rusty wad of steel wool.

Also, warping heads from the heat exchangers at the exhaust manifold cracked the head of my M30 e12.

Buy one that is healthy.

If this is one with good bones (which it may not be...), it looks like a great project to take on. These cars are skyrocketing in value at the moment, if the limited exposure I've had to them is any indication.

They're becoming super popular. Really neat car.
