My son is looking at 2000 323i which claims to be dealer maintained since new. Is there any way I can look up the service records online with the VIN? Failing that, any other way of getting them?

On my '04, the dealer plugs the key in a reader and it gives all the maintenance history. If they have the same for an '00, maybe they can just go get it printed?

What Steve said. You'll need to visit a dealer. Any will do since BMW has centralized records.

X3. Before I purchased my 745 I called BMW with the VIN and they were able to verify the warranty information and see if any recalls were still outstanding on it. They wouldn't provide the service records over the phone. When I went to the dealer they wouldn't give me the printout of the service history because I was not the original purchaser of the car, but they would let me look through it while sitting at the dealership. They have some wonky rules like that where the car owner can't be changed in their system so all used owners never have full access to everything. Stupid really.

Good info. Does that work on a 2000 though? Can you tell by the key, size/shape?

yes it will work on a 2000.
Not sure what you're asking about the key? However, size matters..

My last bmw's had old fashioned keys, no electronics. When did that change?

Be sure to check that the LCA bushings are good. They are a common problem on an older E46.

Tony:
Friend of mine has a 2000 323. (4-door sedan)
Over the course of the past 2 years we've done:
1. replaced broken coil spring (replace in pairs - known issue)
2. replaced front wheel bearings / hub (replace in pairs - known issue)
3. replaced power steering pump and all power steering lines (pulley separates from shaft)
4. complete cooling system (every 90k miles b/c all plastic)
5. control arms/bushings (LC)
6. consumables (pads, rotors, etc...)
Think he has around 100k miles on the car. Nothing major, but all predictable repairs.

I remember also, that the early e46 window regulators had high failure rates. Expensive.

$60 in parts. Don't turn the key with the airbag disconnected.
