Lots of fun and probably the most courteous racers you will race against.

We had a blast last year.

The Pittsburgh Grand Prix is a great event. My dad used to run it every year.

No times, no trophies. Next year for me. They have a driving school at one or two events each year for new drovers. If you do alright at the "at track" school the weekend of the event, you could find yourself with rookie stripes and in a race. They are very good, courteous and laid back.

Here's my thread from last year that may answer many questions.

VRG is about as laid back as it gets. No timing, no grid sheets, I think they lined us up by the lap time you put on the application.

No affiliation, just spreading the word for a great event. Fun, low key. A mix of makes and models in a fun setting.

The 2011 Turkey Bowl is November 25th,26th and 27th.
The early bird entry fee is $250, entry must be in by 11/7.
"Normal" entry fee is $300.00, in by 11/21.
"Walk in" at the track is $325.00.

Schedule is here www.vrgonline.org/events/tbowl/2011/turkeybowl2011schedule.pdf

Turkey Bowl is wheel to wheel racing. There are no points, there is no timing and scoring, there are no trophies.
This is one last chance to bring your toys out to play before winter.
Turkey Bowl has only two rules:
1. You are not allowed to hit anything. Ruling on this is final and there is no appeal.
2. You must have fun. Those not having fun will be subject to individual penalties levied by the group chief as he deems appropriate.

Any questions can be directed to the group chief, Dave Parker at parkerfamily216@gmail.com.

Yeah baby !!!

You think we need anti freeze with enclosed trailers ?

A gallon of 50/50 mix should protect the car just fine. I would hate to trust the trailer's heater overnite, in case Summit Point's electric grid might unexpectedly go down. Not likely, but the consequences are much worse that a bit of antifreeze. On the other hand, it might also be a warm weekend.

That was fun watching. The open wheel cars had an interesting battle where the 2nd place car *finally* caught the first place car on the last lap, hooked wheels in the chute and spun out.

Watching one of the Scotts reel in the Mustang was fun as well.

That was a fun weekend. Weather couldn't have been better and Cal Trumbo told us never to expect it to be like this again... normally 30/40s with strong possibility of snow. Glad we picked a this one as first time Turkey Bowl-ers.

89 cars were registered as of 11/20/11 but 110+/- was the final count, hope VRG broke even on the deal, was glad so many late comers showed up.

Ran in group #2 Vintage Big Bore and had fun running with Jim (dad) in the sessions. I was on R6s and he was on Hoosier TDs (bias ply). We were even from T5 through T9 but he was faster most everywhere else. :)

29497

Friday afternoon practice, last lap before checkered, picked up a weird vibration somewhere around T10, made it through T10, 9/10ths speed down the front straight (Jim was chasing) and into T1 and OOooops!, semi-tank slapper and off in the weeds we go. WTF.

Drove around slowly back to pits with a thump-thump-thump-ing in what I thought was the right rear. Get out, walk around to right rear and hear a hissing from Left rear. Go to take a look and ...

29499

Scott,
Tell Angie thanks for the great pics! Hounding that Vette in the twisties was the most fun I've had all year. :p

Yup.....let the D.A.G. get the best of me on Friday, by forgetting to latch the hood pins for the Quali session. Left the Grid, shifted into 3rd around Start/Finish, and then.....bamm! Nothing but red in front of me, punctuated by lots of cracks. Fortunately, remembered the cross-over roads before T1, and through the gap between the hood and dash, I was able to navigate off the main track. Took the T1 access gravel road back to the paddock, with the hood up. Kudos to TR, who was behind me at the time, for giving me room when I suddenly had to slow down.

Event marshalls told me that if I removed the windshield, and had a full face helmet with visor, I could run the rest of the weekend. So off with the hood and windshield. We also took off the rear hatch for fear that pressure buildup in the cockpit might pop out the rear lexan.

The next session was the Friday race, and I volunteered to start in the back. Spent the first few laps getting used to driving with with a blast of air on me. Was surprised the first time I turned my head to check the rightside mirror, when the wind caught the side of helmet and starting pushing against it. I also discovered that I had lost about 10mph top end on the main straight due to the near aero package. But otherwise, the car ran pretty normal around the rest of the track.

Did the 45 minute races on Saturday and Sunday, and had a great time. VRG is a good group to run with, and Dave Parker, the "Moderns" group leader did an outstanding job! Lots of cool cars all over the paddock, and even more fun to watch them race. Fun spending time with Jason & Jim Scott, Scott Bresnehan, Mark Francis, David Dean and some of Chesapeake's B-Team :p. And special thanks to Jay and John for bringing me a replacement set of hood hinges, so that I can reassemble the car over the winter.

Apparently, I'm now obligated to return next year, as Parker awarded me this year's "Broken Piston" award. I am looking forward to it!!! And I'm happy to adopt my new nickname......HoodPin. :D

Hopefully I'll get some pics posted in the next couple days.

No prob... I saw you get held up by some of the traffic, and with the reverse gridding they'd setup, I didn't want to be a rolling roadblock with all the faster cars behind. I thought it'd be better to let you plow through the traffic while I tried to follow as long as I could. :D

He actually did race it this year at the Zippo at Watkins Glen. If he doesn't bring it, I'll drive up there and hook up the trailer and will bring it myself :)

I know the guy who runs these. They are the original Spec Renault (his are original Renault-powered -- most others have since repowered and renamed Spec Racer Ford). He does corporate events and things like this. I assume I could have come out with the SRF. It was a pretty weekend. He also has a converted firetruck to haul the cars. (My car's vinyl scheme is his scheme with different colors (black car, lime green decals.)

Scott,
Event marshalls told me that if I removed the windshield, and had a full face helmet with visor, I could run the rest of the weekend. So off with the hood and windshield. We also took off the rear hatch for fear that pressure buildup in the cockpit might pop out the rear lexan.

Hope you are paying Dave D his rightful royalties for the Hoodpin name - he earned it in a race years ago. Really like your updated avatar though :D

Car #76 looks like a Lotus 23, but could be an Elva or another British car of that era. There were a lot of different sports/racers in the 60s
Dirk

It was an Elva. I spoke to the owner who was a little eccentric. But what Brit isn't ????? ;)

Eggcentric??Who?? ;-) Hey the Elva was one of my choices. I think most had 1000 to 2000CC motors of various makes.

The Formula car next to it was an Elva too.

There was one car in the open wheels group that was 30 sec off the pace on the first lap. I was listening to the scanner and they were saying it was an elderly fellow just happy to be there.

Well done guys, looks like Dorkiphus was well represented on track.

Thanks for finding the video Hunt.

Here is the aftermath of the mustang spin/stop in Saturday's vintage big bore race. Todd in the lotus was chasing me, we come up on Jim and the mustang just after at 7 minute mark.

Start of Saturday race. Started from the back of the pack. Funny they call this " Modern GT " group. Not sure there is a car out there less than 10 years old other than a couple of Mustangs. :)

Both my Saturday races were also very good (sorry no vid)! I got to the grid a little earlier for the first race but was still about ½ way back. Got a good start by staying inside going into T-1 and got by about 6 or 7 cars!

Saw you got a good shot of David D. and me going 3 wide down the front straight!!

Kudos to Charlie Murphy at Intersport for the great alignment/corner balance/ride height set up! Took care of all my handling issues from CR and let me just concentrate on droving the car :D

Car broke during the 45 min race Saturday. Ran ~ok but was making some noise that sounded valve train related. Finished the race but loaded up and came home that afternoon. It’s on the lift but I haven’t had a chance to do more than drain the oil. Might know more after this weekend.

That's a pretty sweet blue mustang in your video there!! Man, still a lot of bugs to work out.

TR and I have been going to the track together for over 10 years. For all but one of those years, he was faster than me. For one of those years, I had a faster car than he did. I'm hoping we can run somewhat close together next year.

Earlier this year, I was able to keep up with (and sometime pass) 2 other Dorkis, both with 964s. My car is almost the same speed as earlier this year, but they each found more than a couple of seconds this year so bye-bye...

question -- why did you drive all the way back like that, vs jumping out once you pulled off the track and putting the hood back down?

I could see that the hood was bent, and the window was pretty well shot. From the seat, I actually had a reasonable view between the bottom of the hood and top of the dash; camera angle wasn't as good. Fortunately, I was familiar with the T1 access road, so knew I could drive back from the cross-over road. Turned out best I didn't try to open earlier, too. The hinges were so bent, we couldn't budge the hood anyway, and had to unbolt it.

The hinges were bent all to hell. There was no way to just pull it back down. We had to unbolt it. Myself, Tony's son, and Mark Francis had to get medieval on it

I got used to the cold air. A bit surprised the first time I turned my head to check the right-side mirror, and the wind pushed on the side of my helmet. I also learned to give clearance to anyone that looked like they were heading towards the gravel pits. :p
