1971 911ST tribute Signal Orange with cream stripes.

The original plan was to send out the car to California for a year and be able to attend the R-Gruppe Treffen, Monterey Historics and other West coast events, and also drive some of the famous California roads like the Pacific coast highway and Mulhulland drive. While the car was out there, I thought I might as well check into getting some paint work done on a fender that didn't match very well. Surprisingly, getting a car painted there is quite a lot cheaper than here. Well at that price why not paint the whole car. If I'm painting the whole car, I really should add flares. If I'm doing flares, I might as well do something unique, like custom ST flares. You can see where this is going.

The theme of the car was not to build a perfect replica of a factory ST,( no two were alike anyway) but something that could have been ordered from the factory by someone with “connections”, who was not a professional racer, but wanted a car he could use weekends at the track and during the week as a comfortable daily driver.

The car is all steel bodied including fenders and bumpers, which were cut and formed to the fenders, and slotted for the Carrera oil cooler. It has aluminum rear deck lid and a balsa wood reinforced fiberglass hood, done just like the factory.

The original 2.2 engine, has been removed and moth balled. It now has a hot rod 3.2 with 46 PMOs, Amber rain shields, R shroud and "tin ware"

Off center through the hood fuel filler and a 911R style oil tank, with external filler cap; The RSR welded in strut braces, drilled engine lid hinges and door handles.

Custom door panels. They are similar to the light weight RS panels but have basket weave inserts and 356 arm rests and door pulls, and 914 latches.

The original sport seats were rebuilt and recovered in Houndstooth fabric, and incorporate electric seat warmers, for those late fall drives. I’d collected a few parts over the years that I wanted to include in the car, such as the very rare Talbot flag mirrors, Four Cibie hood lights, vintage Abarth steering wheel, dash mounted stopwatches and a Halda Tripmaster.

The wheels are 9x15 and 10 ˝ x15 Fuchs with a RSR finish built by Harvey Weidman. Currently it has one of the few tires that fit, Hoosiers that have been hand grooved.

I always thought that car was nice! Didn't know you were going out to CA with it.. nor getting into a re-duex. So even better, I see you chose Ed & Lapine's shop.. . couldn't get much better than that! Did you notice the Black 993TT/GT-2 Clone? That's one of ours.. well Bert's to be specific.

Looks like a fun time.. get in touch when you return.

What is a ST?

The Porsche 911 S/T or '911S (T)' was a race and rally spec car built by Porsche during 1970/1/2. Porsche started producing a small number (35) of very special competition-prepared 911's to take advantage of the new 2.2-litre engine capacity.
These cars were generally separated into two categories, the 911 ST/Rally with a 180bhp 2195cc engine or the 2.3-litre ST/GT which was generally destined for track racing. The rally versions were little more than stripped down standard cars in most respects, the weight being reduced to 960kg whilst the engines were mildly tuned to ensure reliability, displacement and output remaining unchanged at 2195cc and 180bhp. This proved to be more than adequate as 911's went on to secure the 1970 World Rally Championship.

The bodies often had lightweight aluminum panels for the doors and engine cover, the bumpers and front lid having been fiberglass. Initially all ST/Rally's were completed with standard looking narrow bodywork but before long, flared arches became common place as tire restrictions were reduced and most cars adopted the wide style bodies as seen on the GT cars. The interior was stripped of every surplus piece of trim. The ST was the pre-curser to the 73 RS.

Kundensport gets some really cool projects in all the time and TRE is a great place for mechanical.. I've talked with Dave several times and need to put an order together for some of his "specialty" parts.

The GT-2 Clone didn't need any mechanical short of removal of the AWD system to make it rear wheel drive TT.

Fiberglass shroud and tin are nice touches.. I've got a couple of sets of those waiting for install. Did you get those through TRE, Getty, of Damon?

Looks good man.. can't wait to see tur car again!

Thanks, K. We are trying to give it a period correct look, the fan was sent out for striping and cleaning , It won't be polished or powder coated though, the finish will be maintained by periodic applications of "gibbs". The bright work will all be cadmium plated, 2.7 distributor, a 68 windshield washer tank will be used as a oil catch can. Amber rain shields will cover the air filters.

Rob,

Are you running the same size Fuchs front and rear? Perhaps 9x15 on all 4 corners?

I've been running 8&9x15 Fuchs on mine but I also recently picked up a set of Weidman finished Zuffenhaus 9&10x17 wheels:

Hi Scott,

The wheels are 9x15, and 10 1/2x15, they have the appearance of being the same size, because the rears were also widened on the inside, like they did on the 7R wheels used on the 911R.

Ahh gotcha. The second pic in the first post threw me off compared to all the other pics showing the wide wheels.

Are you running any spacers on the rear?

No spacers, the advantage of a custom offset, it avoids the weight penalty of the spacers. If anyone is thinking of doing this, I had to send eight wheels to him, to make up this set.

Got these updated photos today, I am thinking to use this aluminum flywheel, since we have to buy one anyway. it has a hardened steel insert face for the disc to work against.
this should make for a quick rev engine !

Well the engine is in the car, a bunch of parts are back from the machine shops/ fabricators and platers. The steel trailing arms were modified with "ST" reinforcing brackets (not pictured). A Aluminum roll hoop was fabricated, it will have a brushed and anodized finish. The custom instruments are back from North Hollywood speedometer, I'm happy. The interior is coming along, new head liner is in. A rear seat delete has been fabricated, a very nice piece made by a cabinet maker, much better quality then the original, a shame to cover it. Engine compartment repainted, added a 68 windshield washer tank, as a breather catch tank. Its supposed to be ready for the Sept 1 pick up, fingers crossed, still lots to do.

Hey David, I don't have any plans, but I do have the rear seat delete from my RS America, that I have kept, either to replicate or recover( to match early carpet, this one is black silver knit in excellent condition) at this point I really don't need it, so if you want it, its for sale. The 964 ones look different then the early ones mostly just the doors (nicer).

Market price on the bird seems to be $650... Dorki price $450 picked up.

David, you have first dibs, let me know, if not, I'll move this to the parts section.

Time for a up date. Made some changes, replaced the sport seats with a ST driver and a RS navigator seat. The R exhaust was replaced by triple out rally exhaust. For those unfamiliar, they were used in Europe when rally stages were held through villages that had noise restrictions. The individual pipes could be caped off to reduce noise. I had them sent out to a metal coating company and had Titanium finish applied.
