and several weeks in time. Today I passed by the engine on the stand and happened to look down into the #1 rocker hole at the #1 cam lobe. What I saw I missed when I handled the cam and DID NOT DO A COMPLETE INSPECTION. A small pitting area.

This is cause for pulling the cam and sending it off to be repaired or replaced. This is a 964 cam. That is the bad news. The good news is all I have to do is pull the cam gears and plate (3 bolts) upsetting the timing which must be redone. I'll take a pic when I get it out AFTER it warms up a little.

I'm a little pissed, but not nearly as much so if I had found it later.

Lazy man engine ... thread is suspended until I fix this. Grrrrr.............

John,
You seem to have the worst luck with machining. I'm sorry. Good luck with the fix.

BTW, it was quite comfortable in my garage today.

Besure to post about "fix" to! IIRC the only way to fix is to weld up and remachine. Maybe the shop will let you take some pics or take them for you. Before and after cause I'm curious how bad it is if you missed it the first time!

It took about 40 minutes this AM to pull the cam. An inspection of both cams shows this to be the only problem area. It is on the #1 exhaust lobe. I could kick myself for not doing a through inspection when I removed the cams but I guess I never suspected a problem with a cam with about 10K miles on it.

This alone is not reason to rebuild or repair an engine. Many engines with 60k miles or so might be expected to show this problem and would not warrant a tear down unless many more lobes have problems and the engine had other faults. But, once found, must be repaired.

I have contacted the cam vendor to see if he warrants his work. Will report back.

Flash.

Vendor replied and will make it right. He wants the rocker with the cam. It goes out tomorrow AM UP$ air.
