View Full Version : Hey Tony (APKhaos) or others, where can I tap into the RPM signal?

I got my Racepak IQ3 data logger/digital dash in the mail today. I can't connect the RPM pickup to the coil without a special adapter (according to the instructions).

Through a quick search, I've seen others tap the OBD II port for the tachometer signal, or to the back of the dash for the wire that carries the signal going to the tachometer. The data logger requires the following signal for RPM monitoring:

5-18V, 50% duty cycle, square wave output. Do not connect directly to the coil. The instructions say to obtain the tach signal output from an aftermarket ignition box. But on my 1986 944 Turbo, I'm running the stock ignition.

So, any suggestions? Anybody?

You got your IQ3 - Tony's going to be jealous. That thing is sweet. :D

I was thinking tapping into the back of the tach, but don't know how complex that is on the 944. My '80 930 was easy (1 wire) and worked fine with the G2X. The '90 C2 was an entirely different matter.

Tony knows the DME pin. I think he said #6 - but ask him.

The DME pickup did not work that well on my 951.
I'm using the 680-SN-GMR pickup that clips onto the coil line. Its simple, bombproof, and $42. Its on the sensors page http://www.g2extreme.com/hardware/sensors.htm#

What’s the word on the new IQ3? Have the reviews been good? Has anyone seen reviews vs. AIM systems?
I talked to the rep at PRI last year and one of the only drawbacks I saw was the “log” created by stacking all the data connectors together.

Tony, thanks for the quick reply. That pickup (680-SN-GMR) does appear to have a connector that matches the IQ3. Did you cut off the connector, or were you using it only with a GX2?

The press has been positive of the Beta versions, but the commercial product just became available last week so nobody really knows yet. I'm a guinea pig.
