View Full Version : Engine swap at IMA

Many of you may remember my engine quitted at VIR.

HBL diagnosed misfire in 2 cylinders, and advised me to replace coils and plugs. Unfortunately new coils and plugs didn't help, and the motor failed after 2 AX runs. :bang: (I know... the picture also belongs to the "ROYAL FAIL" thread.)

I trailered the car to IMA. They quickly determined that the motor is done, and in 2 weeks I got a new crate motor swapped in.

Spent today driving 2 round trips to Gettysburg to break it in. (I would like to put another 500 miles on it before the SP DE.) I must say the car ran like new :D

Just want to say thanks to everyone at IMA. (Also thanks KJ for providing reference, and Racer for giving me a ride to pick up my truck/trailer at the AX.)

It's a 3.2. :|

I went the crate motor route since it comes with a 2 year warranty.

I'm glad you got your car back "in time." See you at Summit Point.

The motor has 59k miles, including ~100 track days (2 drivers = 2 days).

I don't have too much info about the problem. The engine was clanking loudly before it shut off at the AX. In addition to the noise, Chris also mentioned that the engine was blowing smoke and oil when they were checking it out.

They did not open up the engine to check out the exact damage, since Porsche will take the whole engine back as trade-in.

Toby, that sucks. This isn't a sleeve issue is it? All my worldly research led me to believe that the sleeve issue was resolved prior to 2001 and generally occurred under 40000 miles. Keep us posted.

So you may never know what really happened ? That would annoy me.

Me too! I understand how the exchange thing works and IMA has better things to do with your money but it would still annoy me.
