Hil,

Does anybody know anything about Intersport Auto Sales of Mclean VA? I am in the process of replacing my Lotus 7 that is on a boat to Denmark and they seem to have some older porsches (964 and 3.2) that look interesting. I am also considering a Boxster S.

Thanks for any assistance.

Before I got my Saab I was looking at 996's and a few at Intersport were nice. I've heard good things about their used cars. I think a few people on this board have cars from them.

At least for the 996's the prices were about 15% higher than most other places so I didn't deal, but still they looked like solid cars.

Question: why did you sell your lotus 7? Love those things.

Mine was an original 1965 Lotus 7. Great car (960 lbs.), handled like a go-cart. However, the combination of traffic, washington heat, and marginal cooling made the 1 hour drive out of Arlington into the countryside pure hell. Finally, a guy in Denmark offered me way more than it was worth here and off she went. Loved my 10 years with it, but it was time to move on. Talk about a car made for the Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point....:D

Traffic, and a/c is an issue and you want an air-cooled Porsche? You sure about that ;)

Actually, my a/c is fine but takes annual upkeep. $$ keeps older porsche's cool. Otherwise you will still melt.

Omar has some nice inventory every time I'm there for a tech session.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not worried about my comfort, but the car overheating in traffic (aka the Lotus). After the Lotus, anything will be cooler (imagine nursing an engine with its temperature at 110C surrounded by an aluminum body...) and newer (1965). However, my long-suffering wife really likes the Boxster, so we will see

Appreciate the help -- Larry

I use Intersport (Charlie) for performance work on my car. They do a good job. Omar in sales is a nice guy ... but never bought a car from him.

Ask for Charlie and get the real scoop from him if you are looking at one of their car.

No matter what, have a PPI done on the selected car somewhere else than Intersport. Try to get a 100% 90 day (minimum) warranty on what ever you buy. Most likely these are consignment cars and who knows what quality of maintenance was done on them. They will tell you only what they know and they don't really know for sure, so, protect yourself and leave a few dollars in the bank for surprises.

I take my 996 to Intersport for service. The guys there do a good job and while they may be a little expensive, they are a lot cheaper than taking it to the dealership up the block.

They always have some nice cars in there. Omar gets them at auction and they prep them at the shop. While I have never bought a car from them, I did recommend them to one of my good friends and she bought a car from them -- I think that says a lot if you're willing to risk a friendship and recommend them! ;)

Old Tee, love the sig - 1/2 87 Carrera!

FWIW the 964 and up cars have better a/c but the a/c in the late (87-89) Carerras are much better than the early ones. I'd agree with the water cool statement but since you loved your Lotus, you may want to consider the RSA f/s here or something lightweight and purer than the later P-cars.

I guess this is why I am doing a sorta RS conversion on an SC targa. Makes no sense at all except to me.

I'll be there Wednesday for my first visit with the 44. I'd say that their inventory is no more risky than any other used car purchase. On the plus side, they will be able to address your concerns. I wouldn't pay CarMax pricing. If their warranty is decent (like CarMax) it's worth some premium.

They've been servicing my 911 through both previous owners for the last 8 years. Omar is a good guy, and Charlie did the rebuild on the engine.

Maybe I just lucked out, but I like the folks there (so far).

Charlie takes care of my race car in the shop and at the track. They do a good job.
Just this past weekend at CMP I tore through an oil line on track with my tire. He spent the next few hours building a new line from random parts so that I could run on Sunday. Worked out beautifully.

I've had Charlie work on all our cars (1 Boxster and several 944's). Unfortunately, he's a bit far from me, but I like his honesty and ingenuity. He's not necessarily cheap, but he'll tell you like it is, and I've always felt I got a fair deal. And he always backs up his work. And FWIW, when it comes to 944's, I don't think there are many out there that are more knowledgeable than Charlie.

Never bought a car from them, but I like Omar, too. Personable, and always willing to help out if Charlie's unavailable. They maintain an interesting inventory of cars. I know of 2 people who've bought from Intersport, and both seemed quite happy with the experience.

I decided to buy a 964 Cab from Intersport and am very happy. Charlie's word has been better than any warranty I every had. The driver's side support for the top broke (snapped in half) the first day I had it --- no apparent reason. Charlie checked it out, couldn't find a reason either, and proceeded to get a replacement piece (very expensive) and a new top (which was torn in the process). No "what did you do?" questions, no attempt to charge me with any of the costs. Just a "Don't worry, I will take care of you" attitude. He has replaced other bits on the car that have failed without question. Needless to say, you know where I am taking the car for service in the future. Indeed, I may start taking my wife's BMW there too.

Now, if I can only get use to how quiet the car is (after the Lotus and its straight pipe, anything would be quieter).

A very happy customer of Intersport Performance and Charlie.:D

Good luck with the new car! You won't need luck if charlie is doing the work, though. He's worked on my track cars for years. I swear by the place.

Ditto. Been going there for almost ten years now. I wouldn't go anywhere else- even if I have been tempted. The PPI is excellent advice though- Omar won't mind and a second opinion is just plain smart.
