In order for my instructor to be able to get out to run screaming from my car, I need to replace inner door handle.
There is a washer like ring on the vertical shaft that the handle pivots on. It looks like it keeps the shaft from dropping out of the door panel.
How does one remove it without the privelage of a very special tool box?
1. without sending it flying to some unknown location.
2. not bend the sh## out of it.
then resinstall.....

It is located below this arrowhead after you smash off the old broken plastic.
If I recall, I think it is a C-clip. I think you have to pull the whole handle assembly off the door in order to remove/reinstall it in a usable condition. It's been a while since I had the panels off, but if I recall, you pull the map pocket first, then the handle. IIRC, there are two hex bolts in deep pockets behind the door handle, and two at the top. You may have to pull the top trim off to get access to the top bolts. I will check when I get home.
(When I have to remove small parts, I find a small room. Years ago, I used to rebuild my V-8 heads in my parents downstairs bathroom. Reduced the search time when the valve compressor slipped...)

PITA, but worthy to replace plastic pulls with aluminum. Really bad design by Porsche with that plastic retainer in the plastic pull and the brass connecting rod. I've had the door panels off at least a dozen times. You can adjust the rod's lenghth as its threaded.
I found the Porche crested aluminum pull with leather handles at Hershey one year. HOLY CR$#@ look at the prices for the leather pulls on Pelican!!! Dont lose any parts as they are "unobtanium"....

Yes the c-clip. I need to pop it off with miniature pliers or something. I had it all apart and then put it back together when I got to the c-clip and said... another day when I had patience. That looks like this weekend as I am relegated to staying home.. I need to push on both sides of the c clip with something.
Dave, did you "pry" it out and then get it back in with minimal damage? Seems hard with the new handle in place on the shaft.

Should only have to remove the upper one. Should slide out the bottom when free. Just a C-clip. Needle nose should work well. Mine fell out some time ago and I just replaced it with a nail

PITA, but worthy to replace plastic pulls with aluminum.
Agreed;) I have a pair of black aluminum pulls for sale if interested. They really do make a difference. I went to RS-type pulls so no longer need them.

Brian,
IIRC the door panel needs to be removed. Porsche has a TSB that replaces the bowden cable and the reversing brackets to a more favorable ratio for 911's built prior to April 1985. The mod is fairly quick and makes the door pulls butter smooth...no more broken handles. I did this mod on my 81 and it took about an hour. TSB number is 8605 and is dated July 9, 1986. Note: the mod can be installed on all 911's retroactively back to M.Y 1974. Only two 5mm holes (some 85 models already have the holes per the TSB).
Let me know if you want a copy of the TSB.

Did no one else see this as a chance to upgrade to RS style Door pulls (and door panels)?

Interesting stuff on the door pulls -- never knew they were 'improved' over the years!

I remember doing this when I first got my car, one of the clips was broken. A pair needle nose pliers on one hand and vise grips in the other made short work of it. It's only plastic clip.

I drove my 81 daily for almost 6 years and broke a few plastic handles. Nothing like having to roll down the window to open the door. After the mod I didn't break anymore handles. Funny, I didn't know about the aluminum handles. The release effort is much less though and worth the mod. You may be able to cheat and just upgrade the bowden cable to replace the original wire style cable but the full mod will only take the additional time of drilling a couple of holes. I used touch-up paint to coat the bare metal of the freshly drilled holes.
