List,

I'm looking for input either for or against my tire choices for my 80 911 SC Targa. I'm replacing a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE750s in 16" 205/55/16 F and 225/50/16 R that are about 5 years old. I did 4 autocross events last year and plan about the same use this year. I will drive this car regularly during spring and fall so its a combo of street use, some autocross and possibly 1 HPDC or DE.

After some research here and on Pelican, I looked at and have pretty much ruled out Yoko AVS and Kuhmo Ecsta MX as these had enough negative comments in certain areas and they just don't seem the right tire for me. I"ve boiled down my options to two choices:

1. Stay with the Bridgestone RE750s
2. Toyo T1R

I"m not planning on a trek to Radial Tire as I just don't have time for that. I am planning on internet ordering and having the tires drop shipped to a shop for installation or potentially looking into our local Tirevan guy.

Any for or against 1, 2, or some other recommendation? All input welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

I was pretty happy with the Bridgestone potenza S03 Pole Positions. I used them for street, track and auto-x for several years. They tramline quite a bit more then some other tires, but have decent grip, even in the rain.

If you're looking for a multi-purpose tire, I have to recommend the Michelin PS2's. We used them on our Boxster, and found them to be an outstanding all-around tire. Though not the pinnacle of performance, they perform very will in autocross as well as DE, and ride very will on the road. The balance nicely and you'll get a reasonable amount of wear out of them. I think they are excellent for autocross & street use. But DE did punish them a bit. However, we did dual-duty in the car at multiple events, so I really can't complain. We ended up purchasing a separate set of rims and tires (RA-1's) for the track, but use the Michelin's at autocrosses (keeps the car in Stock class). PS2's many not be the cheapest option, but IMHO they are worth the cost.

I also had the Bridgestone S-03's on my Jetta and they were the best all-around tire that I had ever put on a car. Did four track days at VIR with them and got almost 20,000 miles out of them. The rears are shot though. I thought they were great in the rain, rode nice, and were quiet. I didn't notice much in the way of tramlining either.

On my 944S2, I just replaced the rears with Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions after my recent off-track excursion ruined one of the Michelin Sport MXX3's. I did not like the Michelin's at all but, in their defense, I think they were fairly old. The PO gave them to me when I bought the car. The rear Bridgestone's made such a difference that I went ahead and ordered the fronts even thought the Michelins still had a lot of tread left. I get the fronts mounted today. With just the rear Bridgestones - the car rode a lot nicer, was much quieter, and took away a lot of the wandering issues that I was having.

I'm a Bridgestone fan!!!

RF:

I like and have used:

1. Tirevan.net [very happy with their service].
2. Toyo Proxes 4s [all season] but in your application would get T1Rs.
