Friend of mine retracted the top of his Boxster S this past weekend after it got cold, and the rear window split...

Porsche wants $5,000 to replace the plastic rear window !!!

Does anyone know of any local shops who can replace plastic rear windows (Porsche/ BMW/etc.)?

Check out the aftermarket tops from GAHH. They have a replacement top with a glass window for $1,042 (one with a plastic window is around $750). Even with $1,000 in installation it is still less than half what you quoted.

Check out Porsche Pete's boxster board. Solutions have been discussed several times over. I'm considering just having my plastic re-stitched.

1) $5k is rediculous. Likely charging that much because they don't want to do it themselves

2) Some people claim you can have a new window stitched in by an "upholstry" like shop. Not sure of any near by

3) GAHH makes plastic window tops AND Glass window top "conversions" for early boxsters. Seem to be well received

4) Ask your friend about the "boxster chop". Its popular (and in the manual) as a way of preserving the plastic window. Open the top about 6 inches, get out of car. gently "chop" the plastic window so it will fold correctly. get back in car and continue lowering the top

5) Sure, the animals are out of the barn already but, remind him not to put the top down below 40 degrees.. or 50 degrees if its an "older" top ;)

The chop is an urban myth and besides doing it looks retarded so why bother?

Sorry. I forgot to include the link to the GAHH site earlier. http://www.gahh.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_57_341_3005&products_id=1536

The plastic window on my 2000 996's top is still holding up pretty well but if and when it does go I plan on replacing the top with the GAHH top with glass window.

For some reason my top will not fold properly without the chop.

It may look retarded, but the one time I tried to be  it left a permanent crease in my window. I was very lucky.

judo chop!

My rear window is perfect and I never chopped ever! Ever!

One time I messed up and the plastic mesh that clipped in the rollbar hoop fell down and I lowered the top without relizing it, and it took a bit out my window.. Rgggrrrh. I never had those things in the car again.

My window cracked and I took it to Bell's Trim & Design in Gaithersburg (301-417-0708). He offered to sew in a new window for $400, but we decided to replace the top because it was getting frayed (I have a '98 ). Total cost for a new top, including labor: $1000.

Go see Bell's. And I believe in the Chop.
