It looks like a number of options exist for the 87 Carrera and I'm wondering what experience you have had. Bosch, Beru, OEM, Clewett Engineering, Magicore, maybe others. OEM are gawd awful expensive at about $700 for a set. Ouch!. Are they worth it?

Holy crap -- I thought they were 'only' $200/ set!

Magnicore. $150 a set. Still hurts, but you walk again in a day or so. OEM wires will have you on your stomach with an ice pack on your ass for a week.

Babble first, search second. Not the sequence DR would suggest. It looks like Magnecore is gonna get my vote, in spite of warnings. They work pretty well on the 928 and were not impossible to install.

I've had mine in 3 years with no issues.

My car drives well, with no issues currently and no sparking visible in the engine compartment at night. I have no idea how old my wires are, but at least 8 years and probably much older (I believe they're OEM). Is there an advantage in changing them?

It will give Michelle a little edge to whip your rear end when she moves from Green to White this year! :)

I bought my Magnecor set from these folks: http://www.apexperformance.net/cartgenie/prodInfo.asp?pid=128&cid=10

When I bought them (a few years ago), the 8.5mm Red set was $105. Now it is up to $150. They also sell a 7.0mm Black set for $127 that will maintain the OEM look and should fit right into the factory guides. If I were doing it again, I'd stick with the OEM look and I'm sure 7.0mm (insulation) will work just fine even on the track.

A great thing about the Magnecor's is that their lenghts are factory correct, so you can route the wires just like they did in the Fatherland.

I like my Magnacores (once I got them to stop hopping off the plugs). Don't get them from Pelican, I had them added to an order I was placing, they cost me almost $300............ouch..........Up the bum with a concrete dildo with a sandpaper condom, and some valve gringing lubricant.

I got the Magnecore 8.5 here UltraRev (http://www.ultrarev.com/Magnecor-m30.html) for $128 about 2 months ago (they were on sale). They have the 7mm for $118.

I've had Magnecores (the 8.5mm variety) on my 951 for 8 years and no issues. Just checked them last month for sparking and they are fine.

Maybe OT, but anybody know about how different wires are made?
I recall the OEM wires on my SC had connectors on the spark plug end that screwed off. The spark plug end of the wire itself had a terminal on it with a small stud sticking out.

The distrubuter end was pretty much typical.
I also recall reading that the spark plug end could be tested with a meter, but I don't recall the exact process.

A lot of people replace wires as a routine or maybe preventative maintenance, but at the cost of some of the more expensive OEM sets, (I'm now thinking of my 3.6 with 12 wires )
Asside from a total failure (what's the bench test for that?) Do all wires degrade over time like our dashboard lights?

It seems reasonable that Original wires 20+ years would have degraded, but what about wires that are 3,4 - 5,6 years old.

Do different wires (cores) last longer than others? Maybe the OEM wires are expensive, but is there a chance that they will outlast the others a few hundres %? I bet lots of people are running arround on 20 year old OEM wires in their car.

There are alot of other wires in our car, why do we only replace these?
Just wondering.

Bill,
I have just bought a set of wires (with factory Beru crimps), for my 964, from a guy on rennlist who specializes in 928. The cost was $149 for the 12 wires. The common consencus is that you can reuse the connectors on the 964 wires. Sure beats spending $450 on a new set of wires?. Andy

That's good to know although I hope I don't need them for a while. I wonder what 6 wires costs for the SC if you re-use the ends. I've kept a few old sets arround for spares.
Thanks!

Another vote for Magnecore Reds from Apex.
