I'm looking for a low cost, serviceable paint job for my track car. Nothing fancy, though the car now has a bunch of fiberglass panels. Anyone have somebody they could recommend? Alternatively, does anyone know of a paint booth I could rent and do it myself?

They fixed my car and painted it for approx. 4K

You can ask anyone who has seen it what they think. You cannot tell it is the same car . . .

Ask for Morris Page. Tell them I referred you.

Don W. had his done at I think the MACO in Merrifield. Eventually he will wade in or you can PM him for contact and details..

If you have a big enough compressor, ~$150 will buy you a nice gun, and you can do it yourself for $100-300 of paint (depending on what you already have). We've done 4 E30s, 1 E36, an acura, and my 911 now...

It as perfect as the time you have to put into it. (The 911 came out better then the "pro" accident repair my wife had on either of her cars)

Its far simpler to take it to someone else though.

For a track car, if you're not all that particular and cost is a concern, I'd suggest Maaco or Earl Scheib (sp?). But note that all they do is spray the paint, so you do get what you pay for. I imagine that the paint would hold up on a track car. I've known a Maaco job to win a car show for Best Paint (no joke! and it was black!!) but the owner prepped the car himself by removing all the trim, mirrors, lights, etc., and fixing minor dents plus doing a lot of masking himself. Then Maaco painted it, then he reassembled. Cost about $800.

Maaco is a possibility. All the glass has to come out of the car anyway or the cage installation, and there are few dents to speak of.

I may end up doing it myself--I have the gun and compressor, but am leery of offending my neighbors, who seem to care about the loud noises and noxious fumes that frequently emanate from my house.

Thanks all.

My neighbors are the same, and I don't even HAVE a compressor or paint gun :-(.

I often paint car parts/whole car in my driveway and backyard. My neighbor usually checks with me to make sure I am done, or paint is dry before firing up her lawnmower and kicking up all the dust....I guess I am lucky.

No personal experience with maaco, but I've seen some cars that were painted by them. From about 10 feet away, without my glasses on, it doesn't look half bad! (up close is whole different story). For a track car, it's acceptable quality.

From my experience, Maaco can be great or horrible. Make sure to see prior sprays. I honestly believe its the individual and the prep that makes the difference. I've seen great $1k jobs and horrible $10k jobs.

Terry, you should get a quote from cedar park if you get a quote from Maaco. The price I quoted obviously was for all bodywork and respray . . .

I had my 944 painted at that Maaco 4.5 years ago. It's not a perfect job, but many people have been suprised when they saw my car and learned who painted it. Including a lot of Dorki's. Sure, it's not perfect but not bad, either. (Of course, everyone could just be polite... ;) )

That said, when I get my track flogger I plan on painting it with Krylon. Seriously. I expect it'll get beat up a bit and that'll be the easist way to do it. You can also get spray cans that are colormatched to your paint code (I painted my Miata's spoiler with one of those) but meh... $4 Krylon versus $20 for that, well...

The thought gives me shivers. I think I would rather go deer hunting with Dick Chaney than have my car in the same county with PK and a paint gun; :)

Good point--my car will be considerably less involved.

Terry - I don't have any experience with Loudoun schools yet, but back when I lived in Fairfax I had a car painted by the auto shop at Marshall high school. For the cost of the paint the kids learn how to paint the car and you get a decent paint job. Sure, they are learning but they probably have more pride in their efforts then the average Maaco employee. Just a thought. Might check with Monroe Tech here in Leesburg.

Yes, if you think about all they did to my car, and ask anyone who has seen it about the results, the price is really not bad. Since they make their bread and butter off of "normal" insurance repairs, their standards are pretty high (although I made it clear I did not expect a concours job).

Terry, you should talk to John Barreto on the board. Just PM him. He could probably give you some decent advice and point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Hi Terry,
Here's a home paint job with a $400, 3-stage (include 2 guns) turbine system. No need for a large air compressor and always gives you dry clean air. Base coat lays perfect but lacks pressures in clear coat, which results in orange peels. This was a blessing in disguise for me because I had to color sand the clear coat down to glass smooth, cut, and then polish it to a miror finish. Not a competition paint but why would you want a competition paint job for a track car?. If you are going to paint it yourself and the primer base is still good, leave the base coat on and the color coat can be done relatively cheaply. I don't know what color you want but you can paint a white car in the backyard and it still comes out good. If not at home, you can rent a storage space out west somewhere and paint the car in the storage shed. Just a suggestion.

Thanks.

hahaha... you know what the best part of it is though? - the guy in my building that used to park too close to that side of the car has definitely been giving me a LOT more space on that side. the view on that side definitely says "what are you gonna do, put a dent in here w/ YOUR door?"

to take care of the 'butch/ugly', i wonder if putting on FULLY POLISHED fuchs would make enough difference to offsett the damage instead of going w/ body work :D

 Wow, and to think I started this fad a few years ago! Course no one notices on a black car ;)

LOL, you know... i didn't realize but even under the semi-caution "deer flag" signals situation, i didn't find any deer last event. i think it acts like a repellent :D
