View Full Version : 911 brake light switch?

I have noticed that the brake lights don't come on as quickly as they should. On a normal drive when I'm not threshold braking, I find that I could probably stop without the brake lights coming on at all. (I look in the mirror at cars behind me at traffic lights...based on the reflection and pedal position, I figure they aren't coming on).
So.... I understand it's a relatively easy fix...some switch on the m/c. I looked at Pelican's website and it said that there are 2 required. The PET confirmed. Do I replace both? It looks like I need to coordinate this replacement with a brake flush. Is there really anything to this? Is it a certainty that the switch is in fact bad? Or a test procedure?

SCs use a double brake switch setup on the master. One on either circuit of the brakes. These are pressure switches and are usually on or off. Never heard of an adjustment like the preboosted cars had. Try disconnecting one, then the other. I suspect one has gone bad and the other isn’t far behind.
Edit: switches are $$, but should be able to get a better deal from Autozone or the like.

even though it's a different setup, is it lever-activated like mine? if it is, you could shave/bend/add washer to change how soon/late the lever moves the requisite amt

Just called Pelican. Factory spec made by ATE are $25/each. Replacements are $9, so not terrible. I'll let you know how diffucult it is. :)

Replacement is unscrew and replace as fast as possible so much fluid doesn't leak out. I've replaced one once (a bad one kept causing the interior warning light to trigger). In my limited experience, even the new one has such a high trigger level that you can still gently brake at a stoplight and not have them light. I just mash the brakes harder now;) Im Im sitting at a light and somone is flying up behind, I remember to hold the pedal hard enough that I know they are on. 911 lights are hard enough to see as it - they better be on.

Yeah I have had an LED light bar for like 2 years now waiting to go in. Something always takes priority. ;) I guess I could wire that up while waiting on the parts.

Changed when Porsche moved the master to the high position and added booster. Also, on LHs master is low spot of brake system! Water/moisture collects there. I know you do but good idea for LH owners to do more than just bleed their brakes at least once every two years. Had one fail during auto-X some years ago. Only one end but still scary coming home

This is an easy job it's just a PITA to get everything out of the way. (this was the first thing that failed when Beth drove the car by herself) If you have a switch fail the parking brake warning in the dash should come on. To reset it just unhook the batt and tie the terminals together for a few seconds. This causes every capisitor in the car to discharge resulting in a complete loss of memory.I.E. a reset.

Linda’s ’87 Targa’s went out the day I tried to get it inspected. Fortunately there was a tech that morning and I got some help reaching the switches. FYI - when your brake lights don’t work BOTH switches are bad.
