Steering shaft bushing repair
Thought I'd share another easy repair which is very common on earlier 911's and apparently 928's as the part that fixes it is a 928 pn. available from Pelican Parts. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...81974-89%29%20
The symptoms are.... when threshold braking into turn 1 at SPM the steering wheel wants to jump out of your hand (singular as you are hopefully downshifting with the other hand) as the plastic factory bushing has shat the bed and crumbled into pieces because your new Hawk brake pads are testing the threshold of tire adhesion. Actually, if you have any horizontal/vertical play in the steering wheel, it's most likely on the way out. Happily this is a quick, simple repair and involves a hammer, . On an SC , you first need to center the steering wheel, then remove the horn pad and steering wheel. A battery impact and deep socket works well here. After you remove the steering wheel (pic 1), you will need to remove the steering wheel stop circlip(pic 2). Insert the repair sleeve on the steering shaft (pic 3)and using a 7/8 deep socket,(pic 4) drive the bushing home using the BFH. don't worry about the old plastic bushing, the new one pushes it out of the way when you install it. Your halfway home, now replace the circlip (I didn't the first time and believe me you don't want to do this), re-insert the steering wheel, nut and washer in the same position,(pic 5) and tighten the nut. Replace the horn pad and that's it. You now have made a repair that should last longer than your headstuds. Disclaimer: I do not endorse this product or the procedures mentioned and therefore cannot be held responsible for abuse /misuse of tools, mis-application of parts, future repairs or reduction in car value. Enter at your own risk, no U turns, keep right except to pass, contents are HOT, cross only at designated areas, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Hint. Don't drive the bushing all the way in. Leave about 1/16" or so lip to remove the bushing if necessary. Down the line you may find it necessary to replace the lower shaft bearings, big pain (I am told).

Just a heads up for others ... this part does not work on 'early' 911s, such as my '72.

I've done this conversion on both cars, but had problems with the bushing walking out after a while. Since then I've used these:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...ber=PEL-ML-STR that give an even better feel, as the inserted portion is a little thicker than the 928 bushing. One caveat is that I had to shave a little bit off the top of the one on the track car: it was rubbing on the base of the aftermarket steering hub and causing the steering to feel like it was sticking a little bit, particularly when cold.

There's more to this story...
At the DE, I was complaining, as usual, about the what I thought was rotor warping after a couple laps. Chalked it up to new pads, and got on with the weekend. I had the car up on the lift yesterday and had a slight looseness in the rt front wheel, thought I'd adjust the wheel bearing, didn't need it, still had the slight wobble which felt exactly like a bearing...hmmmm. Took it out for a drive and heard a slight clunk in the rt front, hmmm, on the lift again, checked all the places I could think of, rack, strut mounts, roll pin, ball joint... no dice....hmmm Got the wife involved and had her shake the wheel while I tried to find the loose part......found it....I have broken the welds on the A arm, control arm mount, must have bound up my A arm bushing at some point.... Pelican sells replacements from Elephant for $200... I'll pull it tonight and access if it can be fixed before I dish out $200 for these simple parts. Link to PPhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...USshk_pg15.htm Anyone gotz a spare one of these?

I've got the entire front end of a '79 SC. Both A Arms and associated mounting equipment is available. Only thing not available is the aluminum brace and the steering rack (Dr. K only has it on hold for a little while longer so he better make his mind up soon!).
