Hall of Fame My 914 Project thread...

When I was 14 years old(1996) my family and I went on a trip to Key West. I picked up a copy of Excellence Magazine and on the cover was a 993 GT2(still have the mag). I read it cover to cover on the airplane and skimmed all of the ads over the week of the vacation. They had an article on an old beat to crap 914/6 in the mag and it really caught my attention. That is where it all began.

About a month ago I posted a thread in the For sale/WTB forum looking for a 914. I went and visited a number of cars all over the mid atlantic and it turns out the car I would buy was in myersville, MD, 10 minute from where i grew up in Htown, MD(thanks landjet for the referral). Got it from a guy named Pat that owns the BP station... He owned the car for about 11 years and bought it from the original owner. Car is a 1972 914 w/a 1.7L motor. Basic car with the only option of Pedrini wheels(a big hit for me). I have owned a few spitfires that all had the bumperettes(which i hated) so i wanted an early 914 that was void of them.

The car was in decent shape and had a single weber 2bbl setup... apparently terrible although i havent driven the car yet. The rear swingarm pivot mount was trash from the battery leaking on it. So after about $400 in parts from Auto Atlanta and just shy of 2k in body work, the car is ready to be put back together... Rich Kyle, Tischer's head porsche tech(who is crazy smart at diagnosing anything from 914s-997 GT2s)(and my 944 somewhere in the middle) is goign to put the motor back in and hopefully we will be able to fire it up in the next couple weeks.

After we get it running the brakes will be rebuilt so it is drivable... Then i will start to focus on the interior...

Here are some of the early pictures(pics of the roof on are of the car before i bought it... After pictures are of the car with the roof off... out of the body shop free of most of its rust. Comments are welcomed!

Don't know if it fits into your plans and I have no affiliation, but Karl is selling his motor out of a 70 that could be a plug and play for you. Still has FI if I recall. If you get it, the motor would still be local when Karl needs it back to sell with his car 8>0 ! Are those Pedrinis?

Yeah i saw that he is Jim, my motor is original and only has 33k miles on it... I am going to stick with that for now and possibly add some dual idf 40s to it this fall. They are pedrinis... my favorite 914 wheel

Casey,

That looks like a fun project, my only suggestion would be to modify your 1.7 engine while it is out of the car, you will never have a cheaper opportunity to do it. The chassis can handle more power as it sits. The 80hp that your car left the factory with is just not enough! Add 96mm pistons, 1.8 heads, duel carbs and 2.0 heat exchangers you will be very happy

Best of luck with the project and keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks Karl... Goal for right now is just to get it so i can drive it. Engine is pretty easy to get out of the car in the future. Depending on finances i will bump it up this winter. I drive really fast cars all day long. i dont mind slow ones for commuting
