Default ChumpCar @VIR south

Hey guys,

Just an update that was historic!

I bought a seat on another team for the chumpcar race this weekend at
VIR south course, since the 944 was toasted at the last lemons event. I also took the phoenix so I could work on replacing the head, and whatever else was broke. When the main car died, the organizers told me if we could get the 944 running and pass tech, we could run it. So we DID. Here is a good writeup on it and lots of pictures.

Oh, and also,,,,,I passed Tony Stewart!

So, after 4 races, the 944 finally saw a checkered flag, I almost cried....

A 944 took third in the race, and this was a true 24 hour race, so they can hold together.

Here are some videos, including a short night time run during which I quickly realized that one donated head light, and a set of magnetic tow lights are not enough.

Looks great. Chumpcar looks a lot more like real racing than lemons.

Edit: That night racing video is nauseating

Donnie, I saw you getting into the Phoenix, but didn't get to talk to you. My bad. I didn't realize you were there until Sunday.

Yeah, I was there for this one too. I rented a seat in the car of my "splinter team" - a couple of guys who ran my e30 initially but started their own team with an '89 Honda Prelude SI. The Prelude was stout and quick. It was darn respectable.

Well, we managed to finish 4th overall, just a couple of laps down from the aforementioned 944. We were fighting like mad to get back on the lead lap and have a chance at 3rd in the last 2 hours, but we just couldn't pull it off, and ended up fuel-starving anyway.

I ran my night session from 2AM to 4AM, and I don't think I've ever been terrified for such a long period of time. Wow, that was not comfortable at all. Numerous 2 offs and felt like a rolling roadblock. As always, I have a lot to learn.

I'd agree with that statement. John Condren (Chumpcar lead guy) is promoting the racing more than the themes. Don't get me wrong...still plenty of silly themed cars and people dressed up as...something.

Penalties were much, much more lenient. If you went off and caused no harm to anyone else or yourself...no penalty. Just get back on track and go.

Very few cautions, very little contact, most everyone was well behaved on track. Good racing for sure.

From an organization standpoint, LeMons has it down cold and Chump is a little disorganized. Tech and registration were not terribly smooth, and I can't imagine if they had to deal with more 100 cars like LeMons.

I think Chumpcar and LeMons can co-exist, but I'd like to see how one of the Chump events pulls in the car counts that LeMons does.

Congrats on taking the Checkered! Sounds like you had a great time.

Racing at nite is certainly different. Can't have too many lights. When I ran a 4-hour nitetime EMRA enduro, we had fitted a lightbar that bolted to the front bumper of our Fiat 124 Coupe. We had 4 lamps on it; 2 pointed downstream, and 2 fog lamps angled to the sides. Gave us a nice broad stream of light. Being able to see apexes was very helpful. Another trick we used was to put strips of tape across the rear window to help cut the glare of headlights in the mirror.

Yay! Glad to see the phoenix kept her lunch down for an entire race!

Chump car is definitely a more strenous event due to the length and night driving, but it may be easier on the cars. Less on the brakes, and more at speed. Lemons is a parking lot with lots of grinding and overheating. The Phoenix just found her strength!
