I actually called Matt yesterday, and have an appointment for the week following next. But when I dropped the car off at Charley Murphy's (Intersport) just now for alignment and corner balancing (he offered a really, really good deal on that. I'll ask him if that's his standard or just because he knew every piece of the suspension had just been off the car...if it's standard, I'll post it). He looked at the engine and then pinched the hose going IN to the idle controlled (from just above the throttle/butterfly valve). It smoothed out to just about perfect until he released his pinch. He then adjusted the throttle screw and voila! 3 cheers for Charley and Intersport. We are so lucky to live in an area with really great independent Porsche shops! Don't worry, guys, I'm still a BIG fan of Matt's, but I'm happy I can drive the car to Shenandoah without that idle problem.

It drives really well, and it is a delight to have a recently-rebuilt transmission (thank you, Hoophead) so I'm not searching for a gear... Got my passenger seat in (thanks, TR) and most of the roll cage padding (thanks, OG Racing). Tape-installed the G2X so we'd have a speedometer, but didn't hard-wire in the power, and forgot to get power to the cigarette lighter. D'oh!

Cool.. I would replace these (two small on one large) as preventative and get Probst's book on Bosch motronic engine management that I have linked to before. The Bosch FI/mgt. is VERY similar to the versions on several other German cars ...and isn't to complicated to self-'diagnose/wrench with the book.

He used the throttle bypass screw to bring the idle down? Sounds like a bad idle valve. The ecu should be trying to shut it @ high idle. Pinching it off should have no effect
(because at high idle it should be shut already, so pinching it lowering the rpms says its open for some reason)

If he adjusted the bypass screw to compensate for a stuck IAC valve, the ecu still can't adjust idle for changing weather conditions and you'll run into trouble in the future.

Or, is it even hooked up? Maybe the harness is bad?? I have a spare IAC here (btw, its the same as 944s) and can tell you how to test it if you take it off. They are rebuildable/fixable if you're carefull.

Thanks, Steve. When I get the car back, I'll try swapping with the one from the Targa (Jazz's old engine). If it turns out it's gone bad (it was fine in the Targa before I swapped engines) I'll ask you for advice on the rebuilding/fixing the bad one.

New name: Heinz Vader, Darth's German cousin. Heinz for short. This comes from the fact that this car is made up from parts originating or spending time in about 57 different cars, and looks a bit like Frankenstein with the bolts on the fenders. But from the front it definitely seems related to Darth Vader. Heinz seems very right for this car, so that's what Ben and I will be calling it.

Naming your car is just plain gay. I thought only 15 year old girls did that.
