All non-factory race teams offer seats to paying customers. That's how they are able to fund the cars they run that are full of real race car drivers.

Nah. Just a major wish. Very cool offer though. FWIW he was the factory team at that time.

I'm sure Alex and the team had every bit as good a time as you did.

Don't those "pay for seat" deals go to people with significant experience? I assume doing poorly is ignored, but those cars are valuable, and a poor driver could take out a few of them...

You cannot really just buy your way in. (at least not for normal folks or ones who aren't financing the entire team's operations) When you pay for a seat there is still a test day first. And you pay for the opportunity to test which determines if the team does extend the offer for you to pay for a seat in a race. A good friend and ex dorki is doing this dance right now with a Grand Am team. Sights are on the Mid Ohio race at the moment.

You still need to qualify to race by getting the required licence for whatever series you are paying to drive in. No such requirement to pay to "test" which is essentially a fund raiser for the team. Bring loot to drive and prepare to sign an agreement to repair whatever you fuch up. When I worked on a Grand Am team, I believe the rate was about $100K for the season. I also recall one of our pros who may not be a household name, but certainly someone plenty here would recognize paid $100K to drive at LeMans. The line between pay to drive hacks and pros varies by series. Oh and if you pay to race and a teamate wrecks the car before you drive, you have not promise of a refund.
