Who is planning on going to this event? I'm pending. Come on lady luck!!!
By the way who do I talk to on this board to get my run group updated on this board?
VaSteve
07-11-2005, 07:49 AM
You run group on this board has nothing to do with run group on the track. Notice that I'm an instructor and do about 4.5/10 on the track. It's a function of how often you post, don't be a stranger! :D

I'm pending, too. I feel asleep hard last night after a full afternoon/evening putting my car back to stock (mostly) and installing my DAS roll bar in a friend's car. So I didn't register until 8 this morning. Oh well.

I'm gonna have to check some of the older threads about the name, but as far as hotel choices, there's a closer one and a further one. The difference is about 3-4 miles (negligible) BUT the hotel further from the track had a full-blown breakfast included. I'm talking all the eggs (3 styles), pbj, bacon, sausages, waffles, cereal, juice/coffee, fruit etc. that you could eat!!! Plus, when you're done w/ the evening's festivities, the place is conveniently located "downtown" LOL.

This year will be the first in 3 that I won't be doing this event. A wedding and my sons open house at his school are taking priority. DAMN IT! I wil be doing the late August de at SP though.

NNJR goes to VIR in the late fall, and they always run a good event. I am pending white (and still pending white for the "multi-event"). I wonder why some are pending (versus waitlist) and some have been accepted, particularly since no instructor assignment is necessary for white?

I have noticed a pattern. I do not think that any applications are processed until the preceding event is over. As such, I wouldn't expect to see much of a change until after Shenandoah . . . Just a theory . . .

No, I wasn't suggesting that it was technical. I was suggesting that it was human. Pending means that your application has been received, but not processed. I think that the highly-paid volunteers tend to focus more on the upcoming event than the one after that. As soon as another event is finished, then move their primary focus to the next . . . Again, just an observation and not based on discussions with Bruce or anyone else . . .

You really do need more than 1 or 2. It's because no single Porsche is right for every occasion. You might say, "All I need is one track car and one street car." Wrong. You really need different track cars for different tracks, and depending on your mood. And the car you use for going to garage sales on a Saturday morning--maybe an old 911 beater, orange or some similar color, with a roof rack to carry home the really big toys--is different from the car you'll want to use taking your wife out for an elegant evening in, say, Georgetown. Of course, you'll need a handful of "in-progress" project cars out back or in storage somewhere thay you don't ever drive.... You'll also need lifts, a warehouse full of tools, trailers and tow vehicles, and a very understanding wife.

Tuffy,
I have been thinking about this overnight, and, inspired by Eli, I think you should reregister in blue and use my car. Seriously, we can share the 44 for the weekend. You are a better driver than I am, and I know that you will be dialing it back a little. The bottom line is that I have complete confidence in both you and your driving ability. The 44 would be an interesting experience for you. We will just have to see if you fit in the seat since it is not adjustable. Don't say no until you have tried out the seat.

Thanks for the offer. But I think VIR is out of the question regardless. After Ms. vB learned Bruce had cancelled me, she made plans for that weekend, and included me in them. Also, thanks for the good conversation this morning.
I will be working VERY closely with Euro Pros to move as quickly as possible on the car. I keep looking for the silver car parked outside the house. Need to get it back as quickly as possible. I can also use this time to finish up some stuff for the Club Race.
You are a classy guy as are the rest of the guys on the board.

Some people have been asking for links back to my VIR track video. For those of you who have never been to VIR, it is a blast. VIR, like Watkins Glen, is somewhat of a HP and "courage" track, but it has an incredible rhythm. This is a track you can drive much faster than you think you can, but you need to be very smooth and on the gas through the turns because there are definitely areas that can bite you hard. Watch the left hander after the climbing esses . . . I have seen more cars wadded up there than anywhere else. Also, watch the entry into snake, which is a sharp right hander that leads onto a very important sequence in terms of lap times. Snake can wad your car up good. You can take the downhill section between the climbing esses and Oaktree much faster than you think you can, you just need to be controlled. The same is true for the area between the end of the back straight through to the front straight (I think that is the right term). That is where you make time or lose time. In many ways, parts of VIR remind me of Summit Point (really 1-3). You will love VIR. It will be hard not to take the 996 there. VIR is nearly an ideal track for the 996. We shall see with the 944.
When reading my track tips, keep in mind that I really am a newbie so read everything I say with a little skepticism. As at any track, drive smart and you will be fine. I do think it helps to see the video of others so that you have a mental picture in your mind before you go to a new track.
Here is a link to some in car video from the last time I went to VIR: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=195816 It is a little embarrassing to look back at past posts and videos, but here it is nonetheless. I think I have a decent line, so the video should help. I have the feeling that, although my driving hopefully has improved significantly since then, I might not be hitting 135-140 (indicated on the speedo, don’t know how accurate) on the straights with the 44 like I was in the 996. BTW, VIR was my first track ever, and I think it is directly responsible for me getting hooked on this sport.

Thats true...not many folks think of this turn as super important or dangerous, but I've had my back end come around there once and that taught me good. Think patience, patience, patience, until you hit the apex.
