Just a reminder... registration is now open.

If you do register, post to this thread so we can begin early planning for a Dorki caravan to Ohio!

I want to again urge that you sign up for Mid Ohio, and if you do think you're going to go, sign up early.

1) it's an away event, so not as many people signup. This is good and bad - it's good from the point of view that the event typically doesn't get oversubscribed; it's bad from the point of view that sometimes there aren't enough instructors to go around. But we usually get an instructor for every student by hook or by crook.

2) It's a spectacular driving track. http://www.midohio.com/track/trackmap.asp. The map probably doesn't do it justice. Maybe the video's better http://www.midohio.com/track/video.asp. There is a back section of the track that's got some blind turns where you never hold the wheel straight for more than a second or so, and it's totally a rhythm thing. It's not a power track; it's a technical track.

Hey Jim, am I going to see you again at MO. I thought I promoted you last year to Black for exceeding good sense in deciding to go home in the rain on Sunday so I could also go!!!
Highly recommend it to anyone. It is an "easy" drive, all turnpike or interstate. Usually Pa Turnpike to Ohio Turnpike to Akron and then South. You can go 68 west to Columbus nicer scenic but probably a good hour longer.

Just watch out for the Ohio State Troopers. They make the Fairfax County Revenue Patrol look benevolent by comparison.

Last year I stayed on I-70 then went north on Rt 13 straight into Bellville. A nice 2+ lane road thru a hand full of small towns, no problems with the trailer. I have no doubt it was faster than thru Akron or Columbus.

Yes, you're absolutely right, Dirk. I figured it would be fun to register for Mid-Ohio again in Green, and go for promotion to Red in one DE weekend. I gotta keep pushing my myself.

Greg I did try your suggestion twice, and in fact it ended up 1-1.5 hours longer.Much nicer drive, especially if you are not towing. Towing and those hills on 68 are a bear. Also some of the smaller roads thru Ohio can be very slow if you get behind school buses, farm implements etc. I will stick to the Turnpike despite the Jersey barriers. Radar detector has taken care(touch wood) so far of Troopers. Have seen more in Pa than Ohio. Turnpike construction has slowed things a bit but still faster. Hope you are back up for it Jim, look frward to seeing you again. I think Aubrey Mansfield has the record of promotion in the shortest time, and that was a water pumper, NA 944.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Yes, the I-70 to I-68 route is much longer, but scenic.

I was speaking of the PA turnpike, but getting off at I-70 instead of continuing to Akron. You go thru Wheeling, WV then hang a right at Rt 13 in Ohio. Nice and flat the whole way.

For some reason known only to the travel gods, the northern route is faster. Never believed it myself until a couple of tests.

The southern is perhaps more scenic.

If I was towing my current setup with an 3/4 ton diesel or big-block the I68 would be fine. But with a 1/2 ton and 350 it's just too much like wear and tear on the old drive train.

If it was anything like last year, apart from being very wet for part of the time, it was also pretty cold. You may also want to check with the track as I don't think camping on the grounds was allowed.May be campgrounds near by. A lot of tracks will not allow camping except at the "big events" when they have extra security on.
