Well it's out! :D
Thanks to all who helped with the drop, Jason, Eric, David, Chris, Charlie, Bill M., Greg, Justin, Bill W., Sam and lastly Taylor for his direction on starting the tear down. Also thank to those who couldn't make it but offered tech support.
The drop was a success. We started at 10 a.m. and it was out at 10:45 a.m.. Not really a record because Jason, Eric and I did all the disconecting the night before. The only two snags we hit were not having enough spacers for the yoke and lifting the car too high for the atv jack to reach the motor. I found out what the problem with the motor was. the number 4 and 6 cylinders had a head sealing problem on the intake side (top). You can see the blow-by where the cylinder meets the head (check Eric's pics). So some machine work is in order. The prize goes to Taylor for guessing right. We managed to take off the fan/alt., induction, valve covers, and tensioner covers before calling it quits for the day. We also checked the cam timing and found I can add little more advance. (found power :D ) Today I cleaned the place up and took a breather. Monday I plan on taking off the tensioners, cam nuts, chain housings, and exhaust. If I'm feelin' real froggy I my take it down to the case.
How ever I need to borrow an impact wrench (cordless) to take off the cam nuts. There's a 12 pack of (fill in your favorite beer here) for anyone who can part with one for a half an hour or so.
Thanks again to those who lent me tools and help to make this happen. It was great to meet some new people and catch up with the usual suspects.
I'll keep the board posted with updates of my progress.

Ted

“Fatal error” on my HF cordless but I have a nifty "Craftsmen" electric that works even better! Let me know.

See my post on the other thread:
Glad you found something that hopefully won't cost you an arm and a leg.
Maybe just one of them.
You shouldn't need an impact for the cam bolts if you have the cam tool.
From what I understand, changing the cam timing does not really add power but it effects the curves. I'm pretty sure Advancing gives more low end torque, maybe at the expense of high end HP. Something like that. There is a discussion in Anderson's book about this because with the SC's they changed the timimg from one end of the range to the other and the Carerra was somewhere in the middle. You also better check piston to valve clearances. If you shave off some metal to get the head seal better it will reduce the clearance. This will also increase the Compression ratio a little.

The clearance on mine was less than what was recommended by Wayne in his rebuild book. This may have been the cause of my #4 ring breaking. (There were valve marks on the top of #4 piston.)
I set my timing at the Euro specs instead of adding additional base shims.
The 83 ROW SC specification is I believe 1 deg, 83 US SC 7 deg and Carerra 4 deg.
Retarding the timing allowed additional clearance between the piston top and the valve. Remember the Euro's had higher Compression which would mean the piston was a little taller. I'm thinking they may have retarded the timing just to get adequate clearance.

I think the Carerra pistons are a different shape so I don't know if clearance is as much of a concern.

Maybe we can get Wayne to do an prologe on his book for Carerra engines. I don't think there is much that is different in terms of the processes. Maybe post the question on the PP fourm.

Anyway, I would love to see the engine apart as a learning experience. If there is anything I can do to help let me know! I probably have all the special tools you might need. I'd rather someone use them instead of them collecting dust!

Another vote for the easiest drop!

Great job guys. Sorry I missed it. But I had one hell of a lot of fun shopping for countertops and bathroom fixtures. Not.

Great job guys. Sorry I missed it. But I had one hell of a lot of fun shopping for countertops and bathroom fixtures. Not.

I wanted to come but was instead standing in the middle of an open lot in 10 degree weather trying to determine where I was going to put my garage (and the rest of the house attached to it. :P )

We'll have to innaugate it with a drop, but it will be a while!!
