I plan on dropping my engine at my place in Falls Church on Saturday, Jan. 10th for those interested. All are welcome. There will be coffee and dounuts in the morning and most likely pizza for lunch. There is plenty of parking as I live on a dead end.
This is new territory for me so I could use some help from all you "engine drop experts" out there. :D Eric has been kind enough to lend me his ATV jack. I have a regular floor jack and 4 jack stands an engine stand and a yoke. I'll be doing all the prep work on Thurs. and Fri. so if your schedules are light, feel free to stop by. I plan on starting at 9 a.m. on Sat. morning. I live about a mile and a half from Kurt's (Taj Garage) place for those who have been there. My address is:

2310 Barbour Rd.
Falls Church, Va. 22043
Cell:(703) 731-9390

The house is right off I-66 and about a mile from I-495. If you need further directions give me a buzz. Hope to see you all at the drop.

Ted

P.S. There will be plenty of "Liquid Wrench" in the fridge!

Best I can do is be provide documentary evidence...i.e. photographer. BTW, I am planning on taking Kurt up on his offer to use his stuff to cut and readjust my left side exhaust...we could do the right side of your B&B too...

Need anything else?

I'm out - family wedding to attend.

Have fun and be safe. I posted my checklist on Eric's engine drop thread just in case you still need one.

The one thing that is often forgotten on the 3.2 is the 6 pin connector that is mounted inside of the left hand shock tower. It usually is discovered by a distinctive "CRACK" when the motor is coming down.

Have fun and go slow. I'll be available by cell if you need the help.

One thing we learned on Eric’s drop is that the oil line from the thermostat to the hard pipe in front of the engine is a lot easier to get off at the hard pipe. 2 fittings to use dueling wrenches on instead of just the one at the thermostat. Also the ATV jack works a lot better w/the muffler removed.

Let me know if you need the oil line wrenches or an extra high lift jack.

David,
I could use both if you don't mind. I'll come and pick them up when it's convenient for you. My schedule is light this week so I can come whenever. Are you comming to the drop?

Thank you,
Ted

I was planning on coming over Saturday but don’t do “early” well on weekends. Anytime after 7 PM, any night will be fine. I’ll PM you the directions.

Do you guys plan on taking all day, I might be able to drop by late. I've had something come up and need most of Saturday to do it. If Dave brings the truck, you'll have no problem seperating the tranny!

Steve,
I'm hoping it won't take all day. However, I'll be working on the car/motor all day so feel free to stop by whenever you can.

“SCHLPEN” is ready & so am I. Only problem w/the 3.2 I may have to "drag it" all the way back to Mt. Vernon to separate the two

You'll all be shocked to learn that I most likely can't make it to this one. My lady just got back from China (after 3 mos.) and we're headed to NJ to see my folks. You know I'll be there in spirit though!

Ted,

You given any thought to how the garage will (if at all) be heated? If todays temp is any indication, I don't much fancy trying to pull an engine in 19 degree weather. I use a kerosene heater in my 400 sq ft garage, and got the temp up to a balmy 55 degrees today. Not warm, but a hell of a lot better than 19!

Ted, it's not looking too good for me to make it.

Chris,
I have an osolating ceramic heater that works well. Also the garage door has a pretty good seal to keep the warm in. There is no way I'm freazin' my a$$ off on this one. There will be HOT chocolate and coffee for those still feeling the bite. I'm testing the heater right now to see how warm I can get it in there.

Ted, I have a big, heated garage you're welcome to use for the drop. But, you'll need to get David to schlep the engine and chassis back to your place behind his truck. Make sure to bring 2 ropes.

:D

After running the ceramic heater for an hour the inside temp is now 62 degrees. Couple that with all my hot air and we should stay plenty warm.

Ted, I might be able to make it tomorrow. I have a heater fan that I can bring. It's not a fireplace, but it keeps me warm when I'm in my garage tinkering with my SC.

It looks like I can make it till about 11:30am.
I have a propane heater that will make you want to strip down to your shorts. I lent it to someone but I can pick it up tonight if you want.

What have you done so far? I should have all the tools you could need, but don't want to bring stuff you don't need. Are you removing the engine only or with the trans?
I've done my SC a few times but not the Carerra. I herd the clutch is different.

Jase, can I have a look at those fenders sometime in the morning?

Bill,
Everything is unhooked from the car except the following:
shift coupler
speedo hook-up
Jason, Eric and I did all of the drianing and unhooking tonight (last night). So all's left is to pull that thing out. As far as tools go I think I'm good to go. Thank you for the offer though.
The clutch is different from '87 on. This was when they switched to the G-50 with the hydrolic clutch. My '85 has the same 915 box yours has. I look forward to putting a face with the posts.

My hat is off :D to you guys to pull an engine in this weather. I hope nobody had frost bite, except from picking up pre cooled beer of course. Hope it went well.

Ted, That was an easy deal with all the hard stuff done in advance. The garage was toasty too! I think you should win the cleanest garage award!
(But then again my only comparison is my own.)

This was my first time seeing the Carerra engine up close. I wish I could have stuck arround for the disassembly!

When you get to the P&C's I have the measurement tools, Big micrometer and dial bore gauge to see how they measure up to spec. I've heard valve guides in the Carerra are didn't last long so if you arn't doing much head work I have some homemade tools to pull and replace them as well as valve lapping tool and compound. I think you have the same camshaft arrangement as me so you can barrow my cam tool, dial gauge and z block. I also probably have anything else you would need for a rebuild. (Top or bottom ends) so don't hesitate to ask.

Let us know how it came apart and what you found.

Jase, I'm going to pass on the left front fender and will let you know on the right. You mentioned a source for new fenders for arround $400.
I'm willing to pay that unless I can fine an almost perfect one like the right one that you have. I'll also be intrested in the doors at the right price. I forgot to ask you if they had power windows? This may also be a dumb question, I forgot what you mentioned. Were they off a targa? Since mine is a cab they would work I think. Are the window channels black like mine?

Good to meet everyone!
