I'd like to learn how to do a valve adjustment and replace my oil return tubes . I would also like to lower my ride to Euro specs (maybe even slightly lower).
Can anyone give me a hand?
Rick Lee

Valve adjustment is no problem. I haven't done oil return tubes, though I think it's pretty easy. Lowering is something I'm not good at! Wher were you planning this?

I'm in Columbia, MD (about 40 minutes from Tysons Corner), but would be willing to take my car to any location. But I do remember Marc A saying that I should drain the oil the night before so that the motor is cool when we work on it.
Hmmmmm I know I probably live kinda far out for some of you VA guys, but I make some mean chicken and ribs. :) Of course we'll have something refreshing to wash it all down too.

Vu:
How is your garage stocked for tools?? Oil return tubes could require BIG channel locks, vice grips or the like, hose clamps, assortment of screwdrivers (I thinking of the worst case here). Need silglyd silicon lube.
I have the valve adj. tools.
Lowering could be a huge project, depending on what needs to be done. More likely than not the bushing need to be replaced (front and rear) although if there is any adjustment left in the spring plates that would be an easy job, however it would only yield a small amount of lowering.
Let's look at the next (not this) couple of Saturdays, when you might be able to drive down on a Friday and leave the car overnight, when we could have at it on Sat.
I just know that if we don't have the right tools it could be a nightmare running back and forth to the closest Lowes or Home Depo.
Let me know what you think.

I have an adequate stock of tools(everything you listed), but since you've done it before, you probably have all the tools we'll need.
Saturday July 19th?. I could drop my car off the Friday night before.
I'll be sure to marinate the meat at least two days in advance :)

Vu, do you have an air compressor and tools? It will make a difference having one for your suspension project.
Marinate the meat and cool the engine for a few days. Another garage and grille story!

I only have an electric impact gun.
The big questions is....
Marc
Do you have a good grill or am I gonna have bring my Weber :)
Rick Lee

You may want to take a look at removing the cat shield and pre-soaking those exhaust bolts, as you'll likely have to remove your cat to get to the lower left valve cover. That means you should get a few new gaskets and bolts too. We spent a good 4-6 hrs. on this alone with my car.
Marc A

Got gas grill.
Rick: Forgot about that 4-6 hours . . . . . .

four oil return tubes and a valve cover gasket set with nuts etc.
Am I missing anything else?
Rick Lee
06-18-2003, 11:46 AM
Two cases of Pabst pounders, 12 qts. of oil of your choice, an oil filter, two crush washers and I think o-rings for the return tubes.

Hi Vu,
I have a compressor, Sears, 30 gallons that can be pick up in a van or an SUV to the location needed in case you need it. I also have the cab 993 and boxter top replacement manual for you that I promissed a while ago. Let me know if you'll need a compressor. I am in Springfield, VA. Andy

A couple comments:
1. Most likely, your valve cover gasket set came wityh the oil change crush washers. Check first before you buy more.
2. You don't need to remove the cat to get to the lower left valve cover, but removing the heat shield does help. I left mine off as I don't often park in tall dry grass. In fact, I don't think I could find dry grass around here if I tried.
3. I think oil change, valve adj, oil return tube and lowering is a bit much for one day. Go with the first three and some grilling for one day, save the lowering for another. My plan is to do suspension renewal along with the lowering, so I don't have to keep getting the car realigned.
4. If Marc's house in unavailable, you're all welcome at mine. I have a decent stock of tools (including air tools), a neighbor who has most of what I don't, and a very nice Weber Silver B gas grill :). July 12 would be the next available date.

Deere man
That's Mr. Deere, counselor! But really, what is "silglyd silicon lube"?
Marc A
06-20-2003, 02:04 PM
Mr. Deere:
Silglyd silicon lube is utilized when superior lubrication of o-rings is required upon installation of same. Case in point . . . brake piston caliper o-rings, oil return tube o-rings, OIL COOLER o-rings, and the like.
Very truely yours,
Mr. Counselor

Thanks for your offers. I'll keep it in mind.

Vu:
We are ok for the 19th. The valves should not be a problem, not as easy as if the engine was out, but that's not an option.
As for the oil return tubes, we will know Sat once I can look under there with the heat exchangers on.
I would like to start at 9:00 am on Sat.
Anyone that wants to see how not to adjust valves and how not to install the collapsable oil return tubes come on by. 8)
PM me for directions as I am not as brave as Jim is.

Sorry fellas but unless you are going to be working into the late afternoon I'm out of action due to a family activity.

I should be able to make it this weekend.

I'm in. I've got an extra set of valve adjust tools if needed. We could work on both sides at once if we wanted.
Also, I'm gonna help Richard R&R the starter as I feel responsible for its demise.

C'mon Charlie. If anything, you saved me from having to deal with an angry buyer, having starter issues just after he buys my car. Please bring Marc's allen socket set with you. Thanks.

Right now I have a count of five attendees plus Marc's family. So I'll plan for 10-12, unless others chime in.
Here's the menu:
-Chicken- with a sweet and spicy Thai glaze
-Short Ribs(most likely pork)- with a soy sauce, scallion and honey glaze
-Chorizo- Mexican/Spanish sausages
-Bread
-Chips
And of course Pabst and a collection of other beverages.
How's that sound? Let me know if you have any special requests. I aim to please :)

Richard,
I'll look for them in the garage, but I think I lent them to Jim, who gave them back to Marc. I have to start writing these things down before their temporary home becomes permanent.
I do have some long hex tools (10") and a 15" extension that should get us enough clearance. I'll also bring a little mirror to help locate that barrel nut.
This is looking to be a true 'Astore G&G' experience. Vu, the menu sounds delicious.

I think I have a 12 of Pabst Pounders laying around from my engine swap last Jan. I bet they're aged just right for this weekend.
If he hasn't posted here yet, I think Dan M. is coming by to coach me on the starter R&R. Maybe we can go hog wild and use the compressor to blow out George's caliper pistons and the wire wheel to clean up my old spring plates for eBay. Oh, what a glorious day it shall be!

Rick--
I'll bring my large torx sockets. There was one that worked better for me on the nuts than than the hex. One other thing--are you getting an oem-type or high-torque replacement? If it's high-torque, you may need some washers to keep the nuts from bottoming before you get them tight. I did on mine.

Dan, I'm getting the Bosch rebuild. No point in throwing more money than I need to into this thing and it will do just fine.

How about "polishing a set of Fuchs over a period of several days?" That job has to totally suck. I'd rather do spring plates again just for kicks than polish Fuchs. Have you read about it on Pelican? Lots of fun.
Guys, we need to write a Pelican tech article for this. Sure, there already is one for a valve adj. But we need to show them how to do it the right way - with a bunch of friends, beer and brats.

Yup, this gathering will definately be picture worthy so I'll have my digital camera as well. Maybe Marc can even arrange a Porsche only parking section
Ron - your description of I95 as a "big street" is a classic. Heck, between the Pelicanheads and NoVa gang we could probably even arrange an engine drop just to make sure we get our hands dirty if you ever make it down this way.

The drive home was awesome. The motor is running extremely smooth and the throttle response has improved as well. Oh.....did I mention it pulls like a freight train? Not exactly but it's definitely faster than before. I'm sure it's because of the hidden hp we found :)
Till next time...
